US Groups Scrutinize Abortion Details in Kenya's Draft Constitution

U.S. groups are closely scrutinizing abortion language in Kenya's draft constitution which will be submitted in a referendum in August.

Both abortion-rights and anti-abortion groups have reservations about Kenya's proposed constitution, and its inclusion of abortion law, but for different reasons.

Kenya No Campaigners Start Work to Oppose Pro-Abortion Draft Constitution

The grassroots organizers of the No campaign on the pro-abortion draft constitution Kenya residents will vote on at the polls in August have started their campaign in earnest. Their effort to stop approval of the constitution comes after polling data shows a majority of Kenyans support it.

Tom Namwamba told the Capital News that the No campaign will begin on Wednesday with a large event at the Red Card Center in Upper Hill.

“I can assure you powerful statements will be made on that day,” he said. “We want Kenyans to know that they are in the trap if they accept the new constitution. We want to get them out of that trap."

Higher Education Minister William Ruto has become the de facto political leader of the No campaign but this grassroots effort will be more of a people's response to the constitution, which contains language undermining Kenya's history pro-life laws protecting women and unborn children.

“We need Kenyans to know that the ‘No’ team is not opposed to the new Constitution but what we are saying is we need a Constitution that measures to the expectations of all Kenyans,” Namwamba told the Capital News. “We need a Constitution that is people-based not government driven.”

President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga are heading up the Yes campaign and say they want to get the constitution approved and pass amendments to it later.

Kenya Poll Has Majority Backing Constitution Despite Abortion Promotion

Though the overwhelming majority of Kenya residents are pro-life on abortion, and despite the fact that the draft Constitution would overturn the country's pro-life laws, a new poll shows the majority of the residents of the eastern African nation will vote yes on the national referendum.

Voters are expected to head to the polls on August 4 to decide if they favor the draft Constitution, which contains loopholes allowing unlimited abortion.

Kenyan Christian Church leaders and the National Council of Churches of Kenya have led a campaign against the constitution over the pro-abortion provisions.

However, the Daily Nation newspaper reports market research firm Synovate released a new poll on Friday showing 57 percent of Kenyans will support the pro-abortion constitution while just 02 percent say they will reject it.

Approximately 19 percent of those polled still have no opinion or are undecided and four percent said they do not plan to vote.

The newspaper indicated many of those opposed to the constitution cited the abortion concerns and even half of those who took part in the survey said there may need to be amendments after the fact to fix problems like abortion.

Every time you make a choice, there is a consequence. One of the most common consequences of choosing to engage in sexual activity is catching a Sexually Transmitted Infection, including HIV/AIDS or an unwanted pregnancy. more

Good Reasons for Sexual Abstinence
Many young people and adults are choosing to abstain from sex these days, for many different reasons. Even if you’ve had sex before, abstinence may make sense at certain points in your life, for both your emotional and physical health.

Abstinence means different things to different people. Many heterosexuals who choose abstinence consider it to mean not having vaginal intercourse, particularly to preserve virginity. Others say abstinence means no vaginal, oral, or anal intercourse. For some, abstinence means avoiding all sexual behavior, including kissing.

Abstinence from vaginal intercourse is the only 100 percent effective means of preventing pregnancy, and it is viewed by some as the best way for young people to avoid both pregnancy and sexual transmitted diseases.

However, if you still participate in oral sex or anal sex, you do stand a chance of getting a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Only abstinence from all forms of sex can protect you from STDs 100 percent of the time.

There are also long-term health-related reasons for young people to remain abstinent until later in life. Women who abstain from sex until past their teenage years are less likely to get STDs that can lead to cervical cancer and infertility. Likewise, young men who avoid sexual activity may be at lower risk of STDs associated with condoms and employing other safe sex practices.

Adults who are no longer virgins often choose to practice sexual abstinence for reasons other than birth control or avoiding STDs.

It can be tough to remain abstinent. You might have to deal with peer pressure to become sexually active, particularly if you're a virgin. Or you might be in an intimate relationship where sex seems like the next step.

One drawback to abstinence is that many men and women decide to end it without fully preparing themselves. If you do decide to become sexually active, be certain to guard against unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases by consistently using condoms and employing other safe sex practices. Take the time to learn about the various methods of birth control and make sure you have access to them if you so choose.

An attempt to smuggle abortion into Kenyan constitution
The World Congress of Families urges the government of Kenya not to abandon the unborn by adopting language that would facilitate abortion, in a draft of a new constitution, reports World Congress of Families.

WCF Communications Director Don Feder noted that the draft constitution, currently being debated in the Kenyan legislature, has contradictory provisions: “On the one hand, Section 26 states that every person has a right to life, and that life begins at conception. However, this is totally negated by the next section, which allows abortion when, in the ‘opinion of a trained health professional (not necessarily a physician), there is need for emergency treatment, or the life or health of the mother is in danger, or if permitted by any other written law.’”

Groups like the Center for Reproductive Rights are urging Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton to push this abortion loophole on Kenya – not that she needs much urging.

Feder countered: “An exception to a ban on abortion for the ‘health of the mother’ is virtually abortion-on-demand. You can always find an obliging ‘health professional’ – including mental-health workers – who will certify that any condition would endanger a woman’s health unless a pregnancy is terminated. That’s the way mother’s-health exceptions work in the United States, and why pro-lifers have fought them so hard.”

The World Congress of Families Communications Director noted that abortion does more to jeopardize a mother’s health (including making her more susceptible to breast cancer) than does carrying a child to term.

Stop this attack on the heart of Kenya!
Joseph Meaney, Director of International Coordination for Human Life International, protested the violation of Kenya’s constitution and traditional values by the Kenyan Parliament and large international pro-abortion organizations.

“Kenyans are pro-life! Their traditional love for life is in their constitution, which only reflects what is in their hearts and institutions,” said Meaney. “When we see the new articles added to the constitution and approved by parliament under heavy pressure from Western elites, we are seeing an assault on the very heart of the Kenyan people.”

Although the Kenyan constitution has long had language defending the life of the unborn from conception, new language has been added and approved by the Kenyan parliament which would effectively override any pro-life provision, opening the door to legalized abortion. Before the revised constitution can come into force, it must be approved by popular vote, which is expected to occur in July of this year.

“Perhaps the greatest insult is that this attack is happening under the banner of ‘improving women’s health’. The only ones who believe that killing an unborn child is good for a woman’s health are those who will profit from the slaughter, Western powers who are pouring untold millions of dollars into measures to keep Africa’s children from being born,” said Meaney. “This is nothing but population control, an imperialist assault intended to rob Africa of its future by eliminating her children. It is a disgrace.”
